This sculpture fragment is part of a larger work portraying the artist Thelonius Stokes, created during his time as a student at The Florence Academy of Art.

Thelonius entered the studio and assumed a pose on the model stand that was both commanding and introspective, marked by a quiet vulnerability. Wearing his oversized winter coat, he evoked an immediate visual impression that initially inspired a composition reminiscent of Rodin’s Balzac. Ultimately, however, the strength of the portrait emerged so clearly that it stood on its own, despite its modest scale.
