Kinetic rock sculpture

Commissioned by Parks Victoria in 2000 for the George Tindale Memorial Gardens in Olinda, Mount Dandenong, Australia. The composition features two granite rocks that appear to be precariously stacked but is actually possible to set in motion for those who understand how to engage with it. Decommissioned in 2022.

This sculpture was commissioned by Parks Victoria in 2000 through a public tender for the George Tindale Memorial Gardens in Olinda, Mount Dandenong. The composition features two granite rocks that appear to be precariously stacked and is, in fact, kinetic for those who know how to engage with it.

The top rock, weighing approximately ten tonnes, silently spins when pushed - it sits on a thrust bearing supported by a post fixed into the lower rock. This hidden element of the sculpture is something many viewers may never think to search for but may discover through an inquisitive, physical approach.

The first of the two videos was taken 2019 and shows me spinning the rock, bumping into my husband who is filming. The other video was taken just after installation.

Unfortunately the piece was decommissioned in 2022 due to destabilisation of the original foundation. The rocks continue to be displayed as separate objects in the gardens.

Year sculpted: 2000.

Dimensions (H x W): 220cm x 180cm. Actual size may vary, especially depending on the base.
