Anatomical Écorché Study
“Anatomy holds the key“
For an artist the study of anatomy and how it affects the forms of the surface of the living model is paramount to understanding how to see the rhythms created by the forms of the body. Building an écorché is a deep dive into understanding anatomy, the haptic knowledge acquired in the process is not easily forgotten.
Done in 2014, my second year of the FAA Sculpture Program under the guidance of Janne Jaaskelainen, this was a process of building a 75cm tall skeleton from scratch and then layering muscles up on one side. The material was oil based clay which does not dry out. I then went on to make a 90cm scale Dynamic Écorché in my third year at FAA which I moulded and cast in resin.
