Red Star

The initial inspiration for Red Star came from the classical motif of the startled bather, a pose interpreted by sculptors since antiquity. I was drawn to the tension in that moment: a woman, interrupted—perhaps even threatened—during an intimate, private act.

In this sculpture, the source of interruption remains unseen, but its presence is deeply felt through the woman’s gaze and posture. It is a moment suspended in time, a timeless vision of impending violence, fated to recur.

The title Red Star alludes to Mars, the Roman god of war, as well as to the Red Planet itself. These two references are intended to coexist in an ambiguous, otherworldly space, where earthly gravity no longer applies. I wanted to evoke a sense of cosmic suspension: the elements are unbound, floating, yet her reaction grounds the composition. Her foot presses firmly against the rock, while her body finds support against a drifting asteroid. My aim was to create a kind of space opera—a dramatic, symbolic fusion of myth and science fiction. The rock has since been removed to allow the figure to float more gracefully in space.

Red Star was selected as a finalist in the Fundació de les Arts i els Artistes competition “Figurativas 2021,” as well as in the 16th Art Renewal Center International Salon. It was exhibited at MEAM – The European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona.

I have also created a smaller bronze reduction titled Peripeteia.
