Leviathan

Leviathan is a biblical female dragon that according to the myth lives in the “watery abyss”. I gave the portrait this name because the models story reminded me of it. Her name is Xiao, and was one of my sculpture students who had sacrificed a lot to come and study sculpture in Italy, including leaving her family behind in China whom she missed terribly. She didn’t show her suffering until just prior to leaving Italy (ending her studies prematurely), and I tried to express some of this deeply hidden emotion when I asked her to sit for me just before she left.

Exhibited in The Society for Portrait Sculptors “FACE2020” online exhibition during the covid pandemic in 2020.
