George Tindale Gardens, Mount Dandenong, Melbourne, Australia.

This sculpture was commissioned by Parks Victoria in 2000 by public tender, for the George Tindale Memorial Gardens in Olinda, Mount Dandenong. The budget was AU$15,000.00. 

The composition consists of two granite rocks precariously ‘stacked’, and is in fact kinetic if one knows how to engage with it. The top rock (about 10 tonne of granite), when pushed, silently spins on a thrust bearing supported by a post fixed into the lower rock. It is a hidden element of the sculpture that many viewers will probably never think to search for, but may discover with an inquisitive physical approach.

The video just below was taken 2019 and shows me spinning the rock, bumping in to my husband who is filming. The video at the bottom of the page was taken just after installation.

Unfortunately the piece has been decommissioned. The rocks continue to exist (separately) in the gardens.
