Floating Thoughts

Started as demonstration piece from the live model for a private student, I developed this portrait from imagination. I played with the abstract quality of the model’s hair shape to give a sense of her inner psychology.

Winner of The Society Prize in the 2019 edition of The Society of Portrait Sculptors annual exhibition ‘FACE19’ and exhibited in the La Galleria Pall Mall in London.

It’s an extended version of the workshop I taught recently in Amsterdam (thank you @feridumn for the pics!), and will be including the neck muscles as well as the facial muscles. Today I went with a group of students from @florenceacademyofart to the incredible anatomical wax museum ‘La Specola’ here in Florence and we had a guided tour including the amazing Bone Room featuring a huge array of animal skeletons amongst which is the skeleton of the elephant that Rembrandt painted when it was still alive! Having a resource like this museum at our fingertips is simply mind blowing!! It’s been closed for renovations since Covid and reopened recently so we feel particularly lucky to see these exhibits! 💀🐒🦄

A while back I was contacted by Brandon Rosas from @fineartconnoisseurmagazine to ask if I wanted to be involved in his ‘5 to Watch’ column, of course I was absolutely delighted! And then I received word that Editor in Chief @petertrippi had chosen to feature my piece ‘The Philosopher’ on the front cover- I was totally flabbergasted, I thought this type of thing cost a small fortune to achieve but no, here was an incredible gift from Peter, and I cannot thank him and Brandon enough for this generous and special honour!! So grateful 🥹 🙏🏻

Last night was the opening for the @societyofportraitsculptors FACE2024 60th Anniversary Exhibition at the Garrison Chapel, unfortunately I couldn’t be there in person but thanks to @okaneliz I got some lovely photos of my work on display, and I got a mention in todays @thetimes, pictured with the Honorary Secretary Robert Hunt @huntsculpture 😎🥳🤩 Looks like it was a great evening, congratulations to all the artists involved !

People think that as a member of the society ones’ entries are automatically accepted but this is not true! They can still be rejected at the last stage (as mine have been in the past), but not this year! 😀 congratulations to all the artists who have been accepted and for those not, I know what that feels like and I’m sorry -but keep trying because every year holds a new batch of works and maybe yours will find its place amongst them…

As I recover from major shoulder surgery I have been going through old pictures and updating my website. So many amazing jobs, all carving poly (pretty much the reason why I have had to replace my right humeral head 😅). Pretty much done on this - just missing some ear cartilage (and the risorius 🙊). Will make a mould and see if I can continue with it post moulding to finish it as a traditional portrait. I will be teaching a workshop in early April @figura_sculpture in Amsterdam following this anatomical approach to traditional expressive portraiture. Check out their website www.figura-sculpture.com for more info. 💀

7 months work in 90 seconds!! What an amazing thing to have a studio of one’s own ✨ Björn and I have dreamt of this for so long, Björn since he was making motorbikes in his early 20’s and me, well since forever!! I hate photos of myself so I haven’t included many - but to be fair, this was mostly the labour of Björn with me trying to help out in between my teaching schedule. In this whirlpool of images you can get a sense of the incredible skills and patience of my man 🥹 what an absolute Legend ❤️ We are sooooo excited to start working on our respective projects in here!
Big shout out to those that helped us out along the journey 🙌🏻 @amitkaro and @sandeep_krishnan_s for helping to move my ridiculously large collection of moulds; @cheinke9541 for helping to move the old metal staircase; my aunt @ingletonsally for generously paying for our mezzanine kitchen when all the money had gone 🫶🏻; and last but definitely not least, we were only able to make this dream a reality with the combined inheritance gifts from both our fathers…RIP Rune and Graeme 🙏🏻 thank you Dads 🤍🤍🤍

7 months work in 90 seconds!! What an amazing thing to have a studio of...

Seems appropriate that the first thing I sculpt in the new studio space is a portrait of the man who has been working so hard with me to create it 💘this is just the beginning, after a few 20 minute sessions, so a long ways to go yet! Playing around with ideas, leaving one side of this portrait as an écorché, blocking in the skull on the right and will add the facial muscles to reflect the models forms as seen on the left side. I have used a Lanteri armature (aluminum wire on a pole) so I can position the head later into a more dynamic position if I think it will work better. I will be running a workshop in Amsterdam in early April @figura_sculpture in which we will explore this anatomical approach to the portrait. The hope is to gain more anatomical insight for future portraiture, but the final sculpture will have a ‘momento mori’ feel to it methinks.

@johngollings is internationally recognized as Australia’s leading architectural photographer who has represented Australia in the Venice Architectural Biennale. It was an absolute honour and privilege to be able to sculpt John from life back in late 2016.
I have known John since I was a baby, my parents met him at Melbourne University where they studied architecture together and they were all very close friends (his then partner Kate, may she rest in peace 🖤, even used to breastfeed me alongside her own baby if required 🥹).
I recently managed to cast this bronze, a unique edition (the silicone mould had aged so much it tore apart as the first -and last- wax was cast from it).

Editions explained

In the context of sculptures, the term “edition” refers to a specific number of identical or nearly identical copies produced from an original sculpture, with each copy being numbered and signed. The artist closely oversees the production of each edition to ensure that the quality and fidelity to the original sculpture is maintained.

Artists and galleries usually provide a certificate of authenticity with each edition, including details about the sculpture, the edition number, and the artist’s signature. These certificates help establish the provenance and authenticity of the artwork.

In short, “edition” refers to a limited number of authorised copies produced from an original sculpture and therefore valuable and collectible in the art market.

One-of-a-kind sculptures are not considered editions because there is only a single, unique piece, and no reproductions are made.

Academic explained

When a sculpture is described as “academic,” it suggests that the artwork adheres to traditional artistic conventions, emphasising realism, precision, classical influences, and strong technical skills. It is often, but not always, created in a teaching environment where the artist has support and receives feedback from skilled teachers and colleagues.

Fragments and Crops

A Fragment is a unique single side cast of a part of a sculpture. It is a three dimensional object and can be any part of the sculpture, the face, part of a face, a shoulder blade, even the whole front or back of a torso. Fragments are often used by artists themselves to make a quick cast of a favourite part of a sculpture to be hung on the wall.

A Crop is similar to a fragment in that it’s taken from part of a sculpture. It’s not single sided but has a front and a back and therefore need a base to hold it upright.

Fragments and Crops are usually made in plaster or resin, they are not part of editions and does not come with certificates of authenticity but are usually signed by the artist.
